A Note Before You Begin

This is not a happy book about a hard subject. This is an honest book about a real one.

I will not dress the darkness up. I will not give you three easy steps to joy on demand. I will not tell you the fire always falls fast or that the morning always comes before you want it to. I know better.

I have learned — sometimes violently — that degrees do not exempt you from desolation. The anointing on your life does not guarantee that you will feel it on a Tuesday when the weight is unbearable and the silence of heaven feels like rejection.

I wrote this book because I was the man in the dark who needed it and it did not exist. I am writing it now so that the next version of me — sitting alone at 3am, questioning everything, holding on by a thread he cannot see — has something honest to hold onto.

This is not a performance. This is a fight. Read it. Fight. Stay honest. The light is coming.

To everybody who ever took a bottle to the head because life had already taken too much from your heart.

To the person whose family got tired and left. To the spouse who said, “I can't do this anymore.” To the child who learned drinking before they learned healing. To the veteran who came home, but part of you never made it home.

To the person who did not start drinking because you wanted to become an alcoholic. You just wanted something to stop hurting. Something to get quieter. Something to help you sleep. Something to help you forget.
